A routing number is a unique, nine‑digit code that identifies a U.S. financial institution. It acts like an address for your bank and is required for processing transactions such as direct deposits, wire transfers, digital checks, and certain electronic payments. You may also see it referred to as an ABA (American Bankers Association) routing number or an RTN (Routing Transit Number).

Separate from your routing number, your account number is a string of numbers that's specific to a single bank account. Your account number is used in conjunction with your routing number to complete certain electronic transactions. Think of them like this: the routing number identifies the bank and the account number identifies the account at that bank.

You may need your routing number for wire transfers, ACH transactions, bill payments, direct deposits, electronic payments, check processing, bank account setup, automatic payments, and mobile payments.

The ABA and ACH routing numbers may be the same or different depending on your bank.

  • ABA routing numbers (nine digits) are typically used for paper transactions, such as checks, and for wire transfers.
  • ACH routing numbers (also nine digits) are used specifically for electronic, automated clearing house (ACH) transfers such as direct deposits, bill payments, and other electronic bank-to-bank transfers.

Your routing number alone isn't enough for someone to withdraw money from your account. However, if someone has your account number and routing number, they may be able to make fraudulent ACH transfers and payments from your account.
